More than 8,000 SCCA-licensed race drivers currently compete in the 250 amateur
road racing events conducted each year at Regional and National levels and each
of these drivers needs the help of SCCA corner workers and event personnel to
make the events happen.
Professional racing organizations like CART and IMSA, and even Formula One and
Le Mans heavily rely on SCCA Race Officials to put on their events. When the
Champ Car World Series comes to Houston, it's the SCCA you see wearing white
uniforms standing on the corners waving the flags and pulling the driver's and
cars to safety. When Formula One comes to the U.S. for the US Grand Prix, it's
the SCCA that staffs the corners and other areas like Timing and Scoring and
Scrunitneering. Several of our members travel the world taking part in the
great races of the world. You can to! Get involved with the Houston Region
worker program today!
SRO? What's This?
On January 4, 2003, the SOWDiv Board of
Directors authorized the formation of the SOWDiv SRO Committee
(SOWDiv Race Officials). The
SRO's purpose is to "create and operate programs that aim to attract,
recruit, reward, and retain race
officials in SOWDiv." The Committee is comprised of one (1) member appointed
from each Region holding races. Additionally, two ad hoc members, Wayne Hill
(the founder of SRO) and Merle Hansen (DA-F&C), and the
now ex-SOWDiv Executive Steward (Jack Marr) will serve as advisors on the
Committee. The actions, programs, and expenditures of the Committee are subject
to oversight by the SOWDiv BOD.
SRO Finance Committee (SRO/FC)
On March 27, 2004 the SOWDiv BOD approved a change in the approval process for SRO
spending. The BOD appointed a 3-person panel named the SRO Finance Committee
(SRO/FC). As the SRO Committee develops plans, ideas and programs, they will present
any spending requirements to the SRO/FC for authorization. Any two of the three
SRO/FC votes is sufficient to approve. By streamlining the spending authorization
process, the SRO should remain bureaucratically svelte and sufficiently agile to
accomplish its goals: to recruit, reward and retain Race Officials in the Southwest
Division. The SRO Committee welcomes the SRO/FC: Susan Balon. Rod Dundus and Laurie
Sheppard as the 2004 SRO Finance Committee members.

SRO Committee Tasks
The SRO breaks down into three primary spending categories: the Race
Officials Rewards Program, the Race Officials Training & Retention Program,
and the SOWDiv Club Racing Multi-Event Pass Program. A new Race Officials
Recruitment Program is in development and will be announced soon.
Awards Program
